How to Measure Square Footage

Square footage is the area of a space measured in square feet (ft²). For a rectangle, multiply length × width. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangular sections, calculate each, and add them together. Always measure in feet — if you measure in inches, divide by 144 to convert to square feet. If you measure in meters, multiply by 10.764 to get square feet.

Why the Waste Factor Matters

When ordering flooring, tile, paint, or sod, always add a waste factor. Material is lost to cuts, breakage, pattern matching, and fitting around obstacles. Industry standards recommend 10% waste for standard rectangular rooms with hardwood or laminate, 15% for diagonal installations or tile, and 20% for complex shapes or rooms with many corners. Skipping the waste factor is the most common cause of material shortages on home improvement projects.

Flooring ROI: What Research Shows

According to the National Association of Realtors' 2024 Remodeling Impact Report, hardwood floor refinishing has the highest cost recovery of any interior project at 147% — meaning homeowners recoup nearly 1.5× their investment at resale. New hardwood installation recovers 118%. In contrast, new carpet recovers only 56%, making it one of the lowest-ROI flooring choices despite being the cheapest to install.

The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard estimates that Americans spent $427 billion on home improvements in 2024, with flooring being the 3rd most common project (after bathroom and kitchen remodels). The average flooring project covers 500-800 square feet and costs $3,000-$8,000 installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate square footage of a room?
Measure the length and width of the room in feet, then multiply them. A room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. For L-shaped rooms, divide into two rectangles, calculate each, and add together.
How much extra material should I order?
Add 10% for standard rectangular rooms with hardwood or laminate. Add 15% for tile or diagonal installations. Add 20% for complex shapes, patterns, or rooms with many obstacles. This waste factor accounts for cuts, breakage, and fitting.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Divide square feet by 10.764. For example, 200 sq ft ÷ 10.764 = 18.58 square meters. To go the other direction, multiply square meters by 10.764.
What flooring has the best return on investment?
Hardwood floor refinishing has the highest ROI at 147% cost recovery (NAR 2024). New hardwood installation recovers 118%. Vinyl plank is a strong mid-range option. Carpet has the lowest ROI at only 56% recovery, despite being cheapest to install.
How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?
One gallon of interior paint covers approximately 350-400 square feet with one coat. Most rooms need two coats, so divide your wall area by 175-200 to estimate gallons needed. Textured walls and dark-to-light color changes may require additional coats.
