How to Measure Square Footage
Square footage is the area of a space measured in square feet (ft²). For a rectangle, multiply length × width. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangular sections, calculate each, and add them together. Always measure in feet — if you measure in inches, divide by 144 to convert to square feet. If you measure in meters, multiply by 10.764 to get square feet.
Why the Waste Factor Matters
When ordering flooring, tile, paint, or sod, always add a waste factor. Material is lost to cuts, breakage, pattern matching, and fitting around obstacles. Industry standards recommend 10% waste for standard rectangular rooms with hardwood or laminate, 15% for diagonal installations or tile, and 20% for complex shapes or rooms with many corners. Skipping the waste factor is the most common cause of material shortages on home improvement projects.

Flooring ROI: What Research Shows
According to the National Association of Realtors' 2024 Remodeling Impact Report, hardwood floor refinishing has the highest cost recovery of any interior project at 147% — meaning homeowners recoup nearly 1.5× their investment at resale. New hardwood installation recovers 118%. In contrast, new carpet recovers only 56%, making it one of the lowest-ROI flooring choices despite being the cheapest to install.
The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard estimates that Americans spent $427 billion on home improvements in 2024, with flooring being the 3rd most common project (after bathroom and kitchen remodels). The average flooring project covers 500-800 square feet and costs $3,000-$8,000 installed.
